WHITE SPRUCE

UNIQUE FEATURES:
- large tree with a narrow crown
- often confused with the Engelmann Spruce
- twigs have no hairs
- is shallow rooted so can be easily blown over

LOCATION:
- White Spruce is found through the interior of British Columbia
- grows from sea level to mid-elevations
- only pure species grow north of Dawson Creek
- can grow in a variety of environments
- often found with lodgepole pine
|
SIZE:
- can grow up to 40 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter
|
WOOD CHARACTERISTICS:
- white spruce is a very important commercial tree species, yielding
excellent lumber and pulp
|
USES:
- TRADITIONAL - saplings; snowshoe frames, bows
- MODERN - lumber, pulp, log buildings
|
