WHITE SPRUCE

  • also known as Canadian Spruce, Eastern Spruce, Black Hills Spruce

UNIQUE FEATURES:
  • large tree with a narrow crown
  • often confused with the Engelmann Spruce
  • twigs have no hairs
  • is shallow rooted so can be easily blown over
LOCATION:
  • White Spruce is found through the interior of British Columbia
  • grows from sea level to mid-elevations
  • only pure species grow north of Dawson Creek
  • can grow in a variety of environments
  • often found with lodgepole pine
SIZE:
  • can grow up to 40 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter
WOOD CHARACTERISTICS:
  • white spruce is a very important commercial tree species, yielding excellent lumber and pulp
USES:
  • TRADITIONAL - saplings; snowshoe frames, bows
  • MODERN - lumber, pulp, log buildings
